Driving from Malpensa Airport to central Milan
From the airport, take the Malpensa expressway (SS336) and then the A8 Milan–Lakes motorway, which is a toll road: in about 50 minutes in normal traffic you reach the edge of Milan. From there the ring roads connect you to the motorways to Turin, Venice, Bologna and Genoa.
Area C: what to know before driving into the centre
Central Milan is inside Area C, a congestion charge zone monitored by cameras.
- Hours: 7:30–19:30, and since 2026 it applies every day, including weekends and public holidays.
- Cost: €7.50 per day, with unlimited entries on the same day.
- Payment: the ticket must be activated by midnight on the day after you enter, online, via the app or at authorised outlets. If you do not pay, the fine goes to the rental company and is then charged to you.
The easiest option is to leave the car at a park-and-ride car park outside Area C and take the metro into the centre. Hours and prices can change: check the City of Milan website before you go.
Where to go from Malpensa by rental car
- Lake Maggiore: Stresa and the Borromean Islands in about 45 minutes.
- Varese and Sacro Monte: about 30 minutes.
- Lake Como: Como and Bellagio in about an hour.
- Bergamo and Città Alta: about an hour by motorway.
- Switzerland: Lugano in about an hour. Check with us before you travel whether the car can leave Italy, and remember that Swiss motorways require a vignette.

Speed limits in Italy and other regulations
In Italy, speed limits vary depending on the type of road: 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on secondary extra-urban roads, 110 km/h on main roads and 130 km/h on motorways, reduced to 110 km/h in case of rain.
For tourists, it is important to pay attention to the numerous speed cameras and the Tutor system on motorways, which monitor average speed. Furthermore, in the historic centres of many cities there are Limited Traffic Zones (ZTL), where access is permitted only at certain times or for authorised vehicles, with automatic fines for those who do not respect the rules.
Alcohol and driving in Milan and Italy
In Italy, the legal blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/L, while for new drivers and professional drivers it is zero. In Milan, checks are frequent, especially on weekends and in nightlife areas, with breathalyzers and roadblocks. Exceeding the limit can lead to heavy fines, license suspension, points deduction and, in the most serious cases, a criminal offense with possible arrest. Furthermore, if the blood alcohol level exceeds 1.5 g/L, the vehicle can be confiscated. For everyone’s safety, it is always better to avoid driving after drinking.
